The Action “TH-INK: Graffiti as historical evidence and damage to ancient monuments” was included in the Operational Program “Human Resource Development, Education and Lifelong Learning 2014-2020”, with a budget of €695,000, financed by the European Social Fund and beneficiary the Ephorate of Antiquities of the City of Athens (EFAPA).
The effort made by all the staff of the Maintenance Department to clean and restore the monuments from the recurring phenomenon of graffiti was important. The vandalism of central or non-central monuments of the city is dealt with on a daily basis immediately and always as a priority, so that they are removed immediately and the protection of the Monuments is ensured. The gate of Hadrian, the monument of Lysikrates, the Stoa of Attalos, Areios Pagos, the door of the Medrese, the temple of Kapnikarea, Panagia Gorgoepikoos, are indicative of some of the monuments that have been abused with graffiti.
In the laboratories of EF.A.ATH. 4,200 objects were maintained. Among them stand out, the bone plagiaulus, the gold geometric jewel with inlaid amber, the tortoise shell with associated metal finds that were parts of a musical instrument, the unique wooden columns’ inlays and the metal links from the Propylaia and the Parthenon, a Mycenaean necklace and the set of vases from excavation research in Chalandri.
The preservation of frescoes in the Holy Temples and the Byzantine monuments under the jurisdiction of the EF.A.Ath., such as in the temple of Kapnikarea, in Ag. Apostolous Solakis in the Ancient Agora, in I.N. St. John the Theologian in Papagou (completed in 2016), in Ag. Dimitrios in Maroussi, in the Franciscan monastery of Kaisariani (completed in 2017), in Ag. Georgios – Omorfoklisia (completed in 2017) etc.
On the South Slope of the Acropolis, the maintenance of the seats of the hollow of Herodion was organized and continues uninterrupted, and the maintenance of the Western frontal wall was completed, as mentioned above. In the same area, the study was prepared for the conservation of the clay plasters of Chalkourgeio D and the stone elements and the mural decoration of the monument of Thrasyllus were preserved.
