A section of the Themistocleian fortifications of Athens and retaining walls related to a street had already been uncovered since 1959 at the junction of Mitropoleos 15, Voulis, Apollonos and Pentelis streets in Monastiraki (in the building of the former Ministry of National Education and Religion). The new excavation carried out during the renovation works for the conversion of the building into a hotel brought to light under the parodic portico of Voulis Street part of an impressive, perhaps cistern marble building, probably from the Hellenistic era, part of a horseshoe-shaped brick duct from early Byzantine times and the remains of two pipeline builders. These antiquities were preserved and displayed in the hotel premises..
