Remains of Roman Athens, probably from the Hadrian period, were uncovered during the school building works in the area of Lenormans-Alikarnassos-Astros and Palamidi streets, where three cisterns (two rectangular and one arched) came to light. The largest rectangular tank, measuring 23.25×28.20m, with a well-maintained pebble floor, is probably identified with the later Hamosterna of Kolokynthos. On the floor of the tank, a treasure of 1073 bronze coins from Byzantine times was discovered. The tanks were kept underground.
