The temple suffered extensive damage over the centuries. Today, of the 104 external columns, only fifteen standing ones survive and one, which fell during a storm in October 1852. The first rescue operation in the temple took place in 1835, while in 1892 the three cracked archways of the temple were fixed, according to a study by Ernest Ziller.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the context of the Project, the maintenance of the monument and the structural restoration of damaged parts of the temple (arches, column vertebrae, capitals) are provided in accordance with the studies approved by the Central Archaeological Council. The works will be carried out with absolute respect for the structural features and historical phases of the temple, so as not to alter its original status and authenticity. With the completion of the Project, the stability of the monument and its active protection will be strengthened, while it is expected that answers will be given to a number of scientific questions concerning the history and architecture of the temple.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
The Project “Consolidation and Maintenance of the Temple of Olympian Zeus in Athens” was included in the Priority Axis “Improving the Quality of Life in the Urban Environment” of the Operational Program “Attica 2014-2020” and is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund.
